Biography

David Wroe is a Resident Senior Fellow with ASPI, and the Convenor for the Sydney Dialogue 2025. He was previously a journalist for nearly two decades, including many years as The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age’s national security correspondent, based in Canberra.

From 2019 until 2022, he was senior media adviser and speechwriter for Foreign Minister Marise Payne.

He was part of a team that won the Walkley Award for international reporting in 2015 and has been a finalist in other journalism awards.

He has previously been based in Berlin and Cairo, and has reported widely from the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific on major issues to do with defence, security and foreign affairs.
