Anny Lyons is a fellow with ASPI's Professional Development Centre.

Anne joined ASPI’s Professional Development team in February 2018 following 12 months as a Visiting Fellow with ASPI’s International Cyber Policy Centre and more than 20 years as a senior executive in both the public and private sector.

Her ground-breaking ASPI report Identify of a nation: protecting the digital evidence of who we are identified the importance of digital heritage and identity to Australia’s national security.

Prior to joining ASPI Anne was a member of the National Archives of Australia senior executive from 2004 to 2017. Her most recent role as Chief Information Officer (CIO) managing ICT, information policy, governance, security and capability.

She previously led the Archives’ public access programs, declassification, government services and whole of government information policy & assurance, including its award-winning exhibition programs and the Archives Digital Continuity 2020 policy, requiring comprehensive information governance and management in all government business systems by 2020.

Under Anne's leadership the Archives moved its primary service delivery to the web in 2005, dramatically increasing the public's use of records online, and from July 2013 managed the Archives' role in leading the Commonwealth's National Digital Transition policy.

Prior to that Anne was a senior executive with the Australian Federal Police from 2002 to 2004, responsible for the AFP’s marketing, media and communications during a period of increased operational tempo for the agency, including the 2002 Bali bombing investigation, its involvement in the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) in 2003 and major national and international operations over that period.

Before joining the AFP Anne spent the previous 20 years in the media, communications and marketing fields in both the public and private sector leading communications, branding and change programs for clients such as the Royal Australian Navy, St John Ambulance and NSW Transport. She managed media and national advertising campaigns for the Australian Department of Employment Education and Training, Aboriginal Reconciliation Council, Employment National and regional television, radio and print media production and training for NSW Agriculture.

Anne was an original member of Australia’s Open Government Forum and from 2016 to 2019 was Chair of the ACT & SE NSW Defence Reserves Support Council (DRSC) and a member of its national council supporting Australian Reservists and promoting Reserve service to employers and the Australian public.

Anne is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, has a BA in communications and Indigenous studies, is a qualified executive coach and a neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) master practitioner.
