Biography

Lt. Col. Rodrigo Duton's career with the Rio de Janeiro State Police (Gendarmerie type) began in early 1998. Throughout his extensive career, he primarily served in special operations units. Initially, he was trained in handling specialised equipment within the PMERJ Air Support Unit. Subsequently, he became a police helicopter pilot.

In addition to these roles, Lt. Col. Duton also advised and provided training to various police units, including the Police Academy (CFAP), the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE), the Air Support Unit (GAM), the Riot Control Battalion (BPChoque), the Rio de Janeiro Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI ERJ), and the National Public Security Force (FNSP) in Brasilia, Federal District.

In 2008, Lt. Col. Duton enrolled in the Advanced Management Course at the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Roswell, USA. In 2021, he expanded his training by completing the Countering Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC) Course at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies (GCMC). By 2023, he had also completed the Program on Terrorism and Security Studies (PTSS) at the GCMC, and in 2024, he served as an adjunct faculty member for the CTOC, PTSS, and the Seminar on Irregular Warfare and Hybrid Threats (SIWHT). Lt. Col. Duton holds the distinction of being the first Brazilian police officer to complete all four of these prestigious international courses.

Lt. Col. Duton received the prestigious Erasmus Mundus merit-based scholarship to complete the two-year International Master in Security, Intelligence, and Strategic Studies (IMSISS). The program took place across three renowned universities: the University of Glasgow (UK), Dublin City University (Ireland), and Charles University in Prague (Czechia). His research interests include evidence-based policing, intelligence-led policing, crime prevention, countering transnational organised crime, the crime-terror nexus, and the use of emerging technologies in law enforcement, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.

In 2024, Lt. Col. Duton became a member of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) Network of Experts, demonstrating his commitment to combating transnational criminal activities.
