Biography

Patrick Walters was Executive Editor of The Strategist from 2015until early 2020.

He has been a journalist for more than forty years starting his career as a graduate cadet with the Sydney Morning Herald in the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery in Canberra covering the Fraser Government.

He specialised in defence and foreign affairs and has written widely on Australia’s defence and regional security issues since the early 1980’s. He has been a Fulbright scholar in Washington DC and from 1988 to 1993 worked for the Hawke and Keating governments as senior adviser to the Hon Kim C. Beazley across three portfolios including Defence. 

He then worked for The Australian newspaper including five years in Jakarta as the paper’s inaugural Indonesia correspondent and from 1998 to 2003 as Canberra bureau chief. He was National Security Editor of The Australian from 2003 to 2010 and the paper’s senior writer on defence issues. He is a long-standing member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
