International Women's Day 2025: Women in Conflict, Protest and Diplomacy

Speakers Ms Gai Brodtmann, Elaine Pearson, Nos Hosseini, Hanna Manoilenko and Aryana Mohmood

ASPI’s Women in Defence and Security Network and the European Union Delegation in Canberra are pleased to invite you to join us for a special event to mark International Women’s Day on 5 March.

This event will reflect on developments in women, peace and security amidst increased instability and uncertainty in the global environment. It will consider the impacts of conflict on women and girls and the roles women are playing in advocating for human rights and security on domestic and global stages.

With the Taliban further restricting the rights of women and girls, the ongoing war in Ukraine, Iran continuing its efforts of repression and uncertainty around the future of US development assistance, this event will bring together leading experts to discuss human rights, security and gender equality, with a focus on Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran, ahead of the 25th anniversary of UN Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security.

Panelists include:

  • Elaine Pearson, Asia Director, Human Rights Watch

  • Aryana Mohmood, PhD Scholar, ANU

  • Hanna Manoilenko, PhD candidate in International Relations, University of Melbourne and graduate of the OSCE Women’s Peace Leadership Programme
